Like other forms of addiction, MMORPG addiction is caused by real-life problems that people are trying to overcome by overusing a specific activity. Several research studies have linked game addiction to factors such as personality traits, psychopathological conditions, and demographic variables. However, the unique features of MMORPGs that make them particularly appealing and potentially addictive are rarely explored.
In this study, we surveyed 418 Taiwanese college students on their gaming habits and used regression analysis to evaluate the relative explanatory power of eleven user experience factors on the extent of their MMORPG addiction. The results indicate that the MMORPG gaming motivations escapism and mechanics significantly predicted excessive gaming. Moreover, age and the amount of previous gaming experience are found to be negative correlates with the level of MMORPG addiction.
