1.7. Intercellular Junctions

Fig. 1.7.6. A proximal dendrite of thalamocortical relay cell (D) is from its both sides surrounded by giant axon terminals (T, arrows). The upper terminal reaches as much as 13 µm. Multiple adhering junctions are formed between the terminal and dendritic trunk (asterisk). They look like puncta adherentia in individual section. However, as shown by three-dimensional reconstructions, these contacts form an extensive reticulum (see Fig. 1.6.8.). Scale = 1 µm. (Rat, ventrobasal nucleus.)
