The Brain Volume Explorer provides an interface for interactively examining volumes of brain tissue at nanometer resolutions. Volumes of brain have been reconstructed from serial section electron microscopy. Using the javascript-based Volume Explorer, users of Synapse Web can access subsections of a volume frame-by-frame. The sequence of frames visited at internet speeds can be saved and played back as an animation sequence at client speeds. This allows a unique visualization of the three-dimensional structures contained in the dense synaptic neuropil that comprises most of the brain's gray matter.
