Degree of the Axon-spine Interface Surrounded by Astrocytic Profiles
To determine what fraction of the perimeter of the axon-spine interface is surrounded by astrocytic profiles, the following procedure is used. On each section of cross-sectioned synapses, the perimeter has two parts, one at each edge of the axon-spine interface. When the cap of the axon-spine interface is reached, the next section is evaluated to see whether astrocytic processes capped the edge. Then the fraction of edges with an astrocytic profile is determined.
